i usually read the verge with a shaker of salt in hand. that said, this was … spot. on.
this quote nails the state of things with remarkable clarity.
An agency isn’t more efficient if it doesn’t exist; it’s simply been murdered. A fire department with no firefighters looks good on a balance sheet if you can ignore that the city is ablaze.
government isn’t suppose to run like a business. it’s supposed to be there to reign in businesses that are run amok. it’s suppposed to ensure that there is some check on those who would prey upon the less fortunate and provide some sort of safety net for when things go sideways. none of these things are supposed to be profitable.
this isn’t to excuse fraud and waste, but to note that anyone who trots out the notion that government should be run like a business, hasn’t really thought through what it is that a government is supposed to provide its citizens.
